no baby today, please!

Yes, I found myself saying exactly that, complete with a panic and confused look, at hospital in Gudalajara today.

I went to the hospital, with the sole intention of 'reserving' my delivery room / pre-registering all at the same time.

not ready to deliver!  @31 weeks - VA wine country
Somehow during this process it was lost in translation that I was only pre-registering, and they began to check me in to pop this little boy out.  I didn't realize this, at all!

Looking back there were a few things that should have given away that the woman was trying to do more than just pre-register me.

1 - The lady was very confused that I had not previously reserved my stay.  I didn't think this was a big deal, as I still have another month plus until I'm due, and I just said, 'Oh, well let's just do all of this today!'
2 - The lady I was speaking with was quite confused that my husband wasn't with me.  Of course, I casually said back, 'It's not a big deal, do we need him right now? He is at work.'
3 - And finally, at the end of the conversation the lady said 'All done, let me just call your doctor.'

And at the 'call you doctor line' is when it all started clicking - it went something like this:
me - He knows I'm planning on delivering here, so we really don't need to bother him
lady - We will need the doctor
me - Okay? For his approval? It's really okay, I don't think we need him.
lady - No, for your delivery.
me - Ya, my deliver next month?
lady - I just checked you in to deliver.
me - Wait a second, I'm not checking in, I'm only reserving my room, no baby today, okay?!?!  Next month!

  1. Oh Mexico! You would think that the fact that you weren't dying in pain from contractions every few minutes or the lack of an overnight bag would have tipped her off. But maybe delivering today wouldn't have been so bad. You know, so you can get back to your sugar consumption. ;)

  2. maybe mexican women are just really calm in labor? ha, ya right! I told D that if this kiddo keeps up his karate chops to my ribs i just might take the hospital up on that delivery on demand service!
